Teaser for upcoming Element Explained which will be a multi-parter because 4-5 factions tearing a country apart from the inside out is a lot of stuff going on. Tho I imagine the individual pieces will be smaller than usual.

own thoughts:
- too little cel shading on the monster
- inconsistent shading in general
- crappy brush textures
- background not layered enough to invoke depth
- boring skybox
- boring color palette/not enough contrast
- monster pose & perspective could use some work and the arm extending into the foreground should be affected by lighting a lot more.

Love it! It's got a neat composition, and the monster's design is very original and intriguing :) --The only thing that comes to mind in terms of improvement is what you've already mentioned about the arm needing to become more affected by light so it can stand out.

Also (I can be dead wrong on this, just a suggestion) Maybe making the width of the image larger will allow for the eye to better concentrate on the focal point?

Bentusi-Paladin responds:

Thanks for the feedback! I did actually play around a bit with the layout and in the end went with this one because it allowed the monster to take up most of the space and to me made it look bigger and a bit more... claustrophobic? Like the monster's so close it already takes up your field of view.

I see what you mean tho, I think I'll play with the horizon height in the future and/or choose a different perspective to allow for widescreen.

Thanks again!

Depending on the fiction, looks like this might be a bad guy? Seems like he's controlling the freaky tapeworm walker thing.

I like the textures on the fleshy landscape/monster! The wrinkles, folds, and holes are great.

As far as shading, it seems like you know what you're doing - looks like a mixed gradient/cel shading, and you've got an idea of where to take it. I agree on the foreground arm, if it's as far forward as you say it is.

I feel like background/skybox are just vague enough to fit the fleshy setting, since the major focus is on the characters, and the monster seems to extend enough into the background to give some feeling of distance.

Your other concern on color could be explained through this landscape anyways - it seems like that ecosystem's colors would fit with the light red of that fleshy ground.

Bentusi-Paladin responds:

Haha, it is freaky indeed, but then again it very otherworldly in origin. Who is controlling who will actually be a major point in the full version: The monster's all about magnetism, and by extension its faction of defenders represented by the dude in the picture. Maybe he's in charge and giving it a hand sign command. Maybe the monster's literally playing him like a puppet and magnetically lifting his armor/arm.
Oh the MYSTERY.

Thanks for your feedback! And yeah it's all very red and red because of tons of iron and rust. What isn't naturally red basically gets a face full of red sand thrown its way.
