Obsidian cuts cleaner then steel by several orders of magnitude, so while perhaps suitable for neither combat nor surgery in this case it would seem to be a wholly functional executioner's tool.

Redesign of an edgy-as-hell sword.
The extravagant design and obsidian glass it’s made from makes it completely worthless for combat, which worked just fine for its intended role as a piece of decoration and not an actual weapon. Even after going through several hands and gaining magical significance, it would almost always remain sheathed, until its wielder found a way to turn its brittle properties into a combat advantage.
