Third piece of a commission series. After I wasn’t very happy with picture #2, I slightly changed my process for this picture, which most notably included a somewhat more extensive paintover after what would previously have been the final step.

I usually work with a really complicated layer structure that’s very responsive to surgical changes at the behest of clients, but also very cumbersome to work with, to the point where it compromises quality in some ways.

So for this time, I tried to combine drawing and painting to gain the strengths of both worlds, gonna iterate on that idea to see what works and what doesn’t. Not sure where that approach will end up taking me, but for right now, it felt like doing this.

Also, for a bit of fluff, the client behind the picture explained the board game to me, which is basically Chinese chess with the pieces’ identity face-down from the start. You’re free to bluff and act like your pawn can move like a queen, but if you’re called out and have to flip over the piece to reveal its identity, you’re punished if you’ve been lying, and if you were being truthful, the accuser gets punished instead. Defeated pieces can be placed on your side if you skip a turn, but enemy pieces have to be face-up.

Definitely sounds like the kinda game you need a lot of endurance and memory power for.
